Covered Gym Tower «G. Vassilakopoulos»

The Tower of Pyrgos is located in Pyrgos, the capital of the prefecture of Ilia, and was built in 1995. It is located at the entrance of the city, coming by road from the Patras National Road. Itis a gym with interesting design and relatively large capacity, which can surpass the 3,000 seats with the development of folding stands on the westside (predicted but never fitted). In the Closet of the Tower, official matches of the National Men’s Basketball Team have been held, while its venue has hosted, among others, important events such as the Final-4 of the Greek Cup in Volleyball 1998, group matches of the final round of Women’s Eurobasket 2003, (U16) 2004, the final stage of the 2008 European Champions (U18) (where Greece won the gold) and the 2011 All-Star Game.

George Vassilakopoulos  is a Greek politician, former professional basketball player, former professional basketball coach, the former President of FIBA Europe, the European division of the international governing body of the sport of basketball, FIBA, and the current President of the Hellenic Basketball Federation. His Origin is from Divri, part of Municipality of Ancient Olympia.
