DESCRIPTION
The castle of Glarentza is part of the ancient fortified city of Clarentia or Clarentia or Clarence, which existed during the Frankish era. In this ancient city was also the first port of Ilia, which was once one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Glarentza Castle was also supported by the Chlemoutsi fortress, which is located in the same area as Glaredza is approximately 5-6 km from Chlemoutsi and 12-13 km from Andravida. More generally, the ancient city was built by the Villehardouins of the Principality of Achaia at the site of ancient Kyllini, in Ilia shortly after the middle of the 13th century and served as a port of Andravida, the capital of the principality. The particular significance of the city is shown by the fact that the coins of the prince, the torsades, were marked by DE CLARENTIA and later DE CLARENCIA. Nowadays some parts are preserved from the Castle.
