DESCRIPTION
The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity hosts more than 400 ancient works from the Sanctuary of Zeus of Olympia and other Museums of Greek territory. The exhibits cover a large chronological range since the second millennium BC. until the 5th c. A.D. The antiquities have been exhibited in thematic units and through them the history of the Olympics, the longest antiquity of antiquity. The most important exhibits hosted in the Museum are the gold rings-seals with the first representations of the races, representative samples of the Minoan and Mycenaean art, the bronze and clay geometric figurines of warriors and tanks coming from Olympia and are the first performances of the historians times referring to chariot races, various items used by athletes, such as discs, dumbbells, arrival, etc., as well as the exhibits that make up the unity of Olympics competitions. The purpose of the exhibition is not just to provide information about the races in antiquity, but also the initiation of the visitor to the institution of the Olympic Games. According to the archaeologist Olympia Vikatos, the erection of the Museum of the Olympic Games of Antiquity, which before it opened its gates with this title was known as the Old Museum or Southeastern, was completed in 1888 and was the first provincial museum built in Greece , donated by the national benefactor Andreas Syngrou. The architectural drawings of the neoclassical building were made by the German architects F. Adler and W. Dorpfeld, who, in fact, had linked their names to the excavations of Olympia, which had already begun since 1875.
